How to Lower Your Cost Per Lead and Get a 7x Return on Ad Spend
How to lower your cost per lead on Facebook ads and hit a 7x return on ad spend, using a top-of-funnel video strategy that keeps people on the platform.
The short answer
You can lower your cost per lead and get a 7x return on ad spend by running cheap top-of-funnel video ads that keep people on Facebook, then retargeting only the people who proved they care. Two moves spike ad costs: taking people off the platform, and guessing who your buyer is. This strategy removes both.
Most coaches think Facebook ads are expensive.
Ads are not expensive. The way you have been taught to run them is expensive.
There is a difference, and it is costing you a fortune.
Let me walk you through exactly how we do it for our clients. This sits inside our 24/7 Traffic playbook, and it is one of the wins we are proudest of documenting right now, because it is driving cost per lead down and sending coaching sales through the roof.
First, the fear nobody talks about
A lot of people get scared off ads. Especially early, before the offer is fully validated.
That fear is fair. But it keeps you small.
Because there is a way to run ads ridiculously cheap and build an audience while you do it. So when it is time to launch an offer or a sales conversion event, you are launching to a warm crowd instead of shouting into the dark.
To get there, you need to understand two terms.
Top of funnel vs middle of funnel
Top of funnel is your cold audience. People who have probably never met you. They are just getting into your world, through a reel or an ad.
Top of funnel is usually expensive. Facebook does not know who your audience is yet. It is still learning. And if you try to drag those cold people off the platform, the price climbs fast.
Middle of funnel is retargeting. These are people the platform already recognises, because they have interacted with you before. Ad costs here are much cheaper, because Facebook is no longer guessing.
So the goal is simple to say and rare to see done well:
Fill your middle of funnel cheaply, then sell to it. \n
The two things that spike your ad costs
Remember these. Everything else is detail.
- Taking people off the platform. Facebook makes its money showing ads. Send people to an external lead magnet and you are working against that, so you pay a premium for it.
- Making Facebook guess who your lead is. When the platform does not know your buyer, it burns your budget testing your ads on the wrong people while it hunts for the right ones. That is a lot of wasted bandwidth, and you pay for every bit of it.
Kill both of those, and the cost per lead falls off a cliff.
The strategy: run cold ads that keep people on the platform
This sounds bonkers at first. We run top-of-funnel ads that do not try to capture anyone.
On purpose.
Here is the mechanism.
Step 1: Run video view campaigns
At the top of funnel we run video view campaigns and optimise for through plays.
We are telling Facebook something honest: "We do not know exactly who our buyer is. But show these videos to the people most likely to watch them, inside these parameters."
The parameters are your rough targeting: gender, age, interests. Then Facebook optimises for the people who actually like watching training videos.
The videos themselves run about four to six minutes long. Long enough to teach and to sort the curious from the committed.
Step 2: Let the watchers sort themselves into buckets
This is the clever part.
As people watch, Facebook builds audiences based on how far they got:
- 3 seconds (a through play) goes into one bucket.
- 25% of the video into another.
- 50% into another.
- 75% into another.
Now, you are probably thinking: great, let's just retarget everyone who watched 75%.
You can. But getting people all the way through a video is hard, so that pool is small. Treat deep-watch retargeting as a longer-term play for later.
For now, you collect all of it. Video one, video two, video three, video four. Rotate the creatives every few weeks so fresh videos hit a fresh audience and keep warming new people up.
That is your entire top-of-funnel campaign. Cheap, on-platform, and quietly building an asset.
Step 3: Move the watchers into your middle of funnel
Every one of those watchers, the 3-second crowd through to the 75% crowd, was collected from real pixel and behaviour data.
They move into your middle of funnel audience.
And here is why that matters. These people were not guessed. They validated themselves by watching your content. So when you finally do take them off the platform, you are not paying Facebook to gamble on strangers.
Step 4: Now, and only now, make your offer
To this warm middle-of-funnel audience, you run the ad you actually care about.
A video or an image promoting your sales conversion event. A free workshop, a free challenge, something that earns the opt-in.
Then you get the opt-in.
Look at what just happened. At the top of funnel you never took anyone off the platform, so it stayed cheap. And when you did take people off the platform, you were not guessing who they were, because the video views already qualified them.
You removed both cost spikes. That is the whole game.

What the numbers look like
\n When both cost drivers are gone, the maths gets silly.
We can get someone into our audience for less than two cents.
We can get a lead for less than $10.
So picture spending $100 and pulling in 100 leads. Close a single client on a 3K package off the back of that, and your ad spend is a rounding error against the return. That is the shape of a 7x return on ad spend, and it is exactly how we have taken people from cold to hot inside a 10-day window.
Cheap top of funnel. Cheaper middle of funnel. A qualified audience that is ready when you are.
You do not have to rely on ads alone
Here is the bit that makes this durable.
Your middle-of-funnel pool does not only fill from the video ads. You can feed it from three more places:
- Instagram engagement. When you post reels, the people who like and comment can be pulled in.
- Your email list. Upload it into your middle of funnel.
- Facebook engagement. Anyone interacting with your page or content.
So you are not betting everything on the video strategy. You are stacking multiple sources into one warm audience you can retarget on demand.
That is a huge advantage at launch time. Because when you launch organically, the post goes to a small slice of your audience first. If it performs, it spreads. But a strong call to action only ever scoops up the hot buyers who happen to be ready that day.
This retargeting pool scoops up far more. It gets more people into your sales conversion events, which gives you more chances to close.
Common mistakes to avoid
Sending cold traffic straight to an external opt-in. This is the single most expensive thing you can do. Warm them on the platform first.
Letting Facebook guess your buyer. If you skip the video-view qualifying step, you are paying for the platform's guesswork. Make people self-select instead.
Only retargeting your 75% watchers. That pool is too small to scale on alone early. Collect every tier and grow it.
Relying on ads only. Pour Instagram, email, and Facebook engagement into the same middle-of-funnel pool so it keeps filling even when ad spend is low.
Your next step
If ads have scared you off, or burned you before, it was almost certainly one of those two cost spikes doing the damage. Not ads themselves.
Fix the structure and the same platform that felt expensive becomes the cheapest lead source you have.
The fastest way to see it click is to watch the event these ads are built to fill.

Frequently asked questions
How long should the top-of-funnel videos be?
Around four to six minutes. Long enough to teach something real and to separate genuine interest from a passing scroll.
What is a through play?
Facebook counts a through play at roughly the 3-second mark. It is the lightest signal of interest, and it still earns a place in your buckets.
What is a sales conversion event?
A short, high-value event such as a free workshop or challenge that warms leads fast and leads into your offer. It is the thing your middle-of-funnel ads point to.
How cheap can leads really get?
On this model we see audience adds for under two cents and leads for under $10. Your numbers will vary by niche and creative, but removing the two cost spikes is what makes cheap possible.
Do I need a big budget to start?
No. That is the point. Top-of-funnel video views are one of the cheapest objectives on the platform, so you can build the audience on a small spend before you ever push an offer.
